Liam Payne's Buenos Aires hotel room was found in "total disorder" with medications scattered around during a search after his death, police have said.

Former One Direction star Payne, 31, died from "extremely serious injuries" including hemorrhages and multiple traumatic injuries on Wednesday when he fell from a third-floor hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires, triggering an outpouring of tributes.

Police said they received an urgent phone call at 5.04pm local time from a worker at CasaSur hotel fearing for the safety of an "aggressive man...destroying the entire room".

On Thursday, police said they found broken items around his room, as well as the medication anxiety drug Clonazepam, a bottle of whiskey, a lighter and a cell phone and over-the-counter medicines.

While details surrounding the circumstances of his death remained unclear, Payne had spoken publicly about his struggles with mental health and using alcohol to cope with the pressures of fame. Authorities will now conduct a post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death.
